Exploring the Influence of AI and ChatGPT on University EFL Learners
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of artificial intelligence, specifically the use of ChatGPT, on the grammatical proficiency of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners at the university level, with a secondary focus on related language skills. The study is significant as it introduces a new paradigm in traditional English Language Teaching (ELT) by incorporating AI-powered optimized learning practices, including customized learning and feedback. A mixed-methods study was conducted, in which eighty EFL students were assigned to experimental and control groups. A series of pre- and post-tests were administered to measure learners’ grammatical competence. Reflective essays writing and interviews were also employed to capture their perceptions and experiences during the intervention period. The results show that learners using AI tools made significant improvements in their grammatical accuracy as well as significant gains in learner engagement. The study concludes that ChatGPT is an effective tool for enhancing grammatical proficiency and improving learning outcomes. The implications are that AI in ELT offers personalized effective and engaging learning experiences; however, it will be up to implementers to avoid overreliance on this new technology while maintaining a balance with traditional pedagogical elements.
