Augmented Reality–Based Learning Media on Mathematical Comput ...
Abstract
This study is driven by the significance of enhancing the mathematical computational thinking (CT) skills among middle-school students. Students with proficient mathematical CT skills are generally adept at comprehending and tackling mathematical problems in a pragmatic manner. One of the instructional methodologies that can foster students’ mathematical CT is a pedagogical approach integrating technology, such as utilizing augmented reality (AR) in learning. AR, a technology that integrates three-dimensional virtual elements into a real-world setting and projects them in real time, offers an interactive platform suitable for mobile-based learning. Moreover, AR facilitates a deeper conceptual understanding by creating a more immersive learning environment. The objective of this study was to enhance mathematical CT through AR-based learning, utilizing Unity 3D as the AR platform, applicable for both online and offline learning modalities. This quantitative research engaged 30 seventh-grade students from SMPN 34 Pekanbaru in the academic year 2022/2023 as participants, focusing on triangles and quadrilaterals. Data collection methods encompassed: (1) CT ability assessments, (2) interviews, and (3) documentation. Test results underwent statistical analysis, while interview transcripts and documentation were analyzed descriptively. Findings revealed that students exposed to AR-based learning with Unity 3D exhibited superior CT skills compared to those undergoing conventional instruction.
