Assessment for Learning MOOC’s Updates
Kahoot! as an Innovative Digital Assessment Tool in Philippine Classrooms
Digital platforms are changing how teachers assess student learning in the Philippines. One example is Kahoot!, a game-based assessment tool that allows teachers to conduct quizzes using students’ own devices. Instead of paper tests, questions are displayed on a shared screen while learners answer through smartphones or laptops, creating a fast, interactive “game show” atmosphere. This makes assessment immediate, low-stakes, and engaging, especially useful in large classes where individual checking is difficult.
In the Philippine context, teachers have used Kahoot! for quick comprehension checks, math and science reviews, and to increase participation during online or blended learning. Studies show it can improve motivation and focus, providing real-time feedback that helps teachers identify misconceptions and adjust lessons the same day. This is valuable in public schools where limited time and resources often make continuous assessment difficult.
However, there are also challenges. Kahoot! mostly uses multiple-choice items, which means it measures recall more than higher-order skills like analysis or writing. It also depends on internet access and student devices, which can be uneven in rural communities. If only some learners can participate, digital assessment risks worsening inequality. Finally, competition and time limits may create anxiety for slower readers or learners with connectivity issues.
Used thoughtfully, Kahoot! can support formative assessment in Philippine classrooms—especially when combined with performance tasks, projects, and teacher observations. It should enhance, not replace, deeper assessments aligned with curriculum goals.
