Learning Analytics in Google Classroom: How It Works and Its Effects
Google Classroom offers built-in learning analytics through tools like Classroom Insights, activity dashboards, and automated grade summaries. These features track student engagement by monitoring assignment submissions, time spent on tasks, missing work, and overall progress. Teachers receive visual reports showing who is falling behind, who consistently performs well, and which tasks need reteaching or support. Students also see their own progress, grades, and feedback in real time.
The effects are generally positive: teachers can intervene earlier, personalize instruction, and manage workloads more efficiently. Students become more accountable because they clearly see deadlines, performance trends, and teacher feedback. However, the system still depends on consistent device access and internet connectivity, and it may overemphasize measurable behaviors while overlooking deeper learning that isn’t easily tracked by analytics.
