The Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM) is a well-known example of an intelligence test. This test uses a series of geometric patterns with a missing piece to gauge nonverbal reasoning. To finish the design, the test-taker must recognize the pattern and select the appropriate piece from a variety of options. Because the items gradually increase in difficulty, the test assesses how well a person recognizes patterns, analyzes relationships among shapes, and uses logical reasoning to solve problems. The Raven's test is one of the most equitable instruments for assessing abstract thinking because it reduces the impact of language, culture, and formal education. However, the test also has weaknesses: it does not measure other important aspects of intelligence such as verbal skills, creativity, memory, or practical problem-solving. Unfamiliarity with puzzle-style tasks or test-taking anxiety may also have an impact. Additionally, since it focuses only on pattern recognition, it offers a limited picture of a person’s overall intellectual functioning. For a more thorough understanding of a person's abilities, the Raven's Progressive Matrices should be used in conjunction with other assessments, even though it is a valuable and well-respected tool.
