Portfolio assessment is an example of an alternative form of assessment. It is widely used in the Philippines. In each quarter, students are required to compile their work, which usually includes a reflection based on their submissions. It provides an authentic demonstration of a learner's progress, skills, and achievement, which helps students to reflect and also assists teachers in providing feedback. With the help of this method, students can perform self-assessment to identify their needs and strengths, fostering a sense of belonging and involving them in their own learning.

Standardized tests are built on social assumptions, such as the expectation of uniform learner skills and the idea that every student has an equal chance to acquire knowledge. It has certain objectives. On the other hand, alternative assessment makes the assumption that students come from diverse backgrounds and are culturally sensitive. It is flexible, genuine, and focused on the needs of the students.
