Assessment for Learning MOOC’s Updates

Using Canvas LMS as an Example of Embedded Learning Analytics

In exploring how embedded learning analytics can enhance teaching and learning, I looked closely at Canvas LMS, a platform widely used in schools and universities. Canvas offers a built-in analytics dashboard that captures real-time data on student progress, such as assignment submissions, time spent on activities, and patterns of engagement. What I found most valuable is how the system translates this data into clear visual reports that help teachers spot which learners may need additional support. From a student’s perspective, the personalized feedback and progress tracking encourage greater responsibility for their own learning, which aligns strongly with assessment for learning principles. However, while these features are powerful, they also present challenges. Analytics require teachers to interpret data thoughtfully, and the constant monitoring may raise concerns about student privacy or data misuse if not handled properly. Overall, my experience shows that learning analytics in Canvas can meaningfully support early intervention, self-regulated learning, and more informed assessment, as long as institutions have clear policies and proper training in place.
