Learning Journals as a Student-Centered Alternative Assessment
An alternative form of assessment that I find meaningful is the learning journal. In this approach, students write short reflections after lessons or activities about what they learned, what they found challenging, and how they plan to improve. It is simple, personal, and suitable for different types of learners. Unlike traditional exams, learning journals do not judge students based on speed or memorization. Instead, they focus on growth and understanding over time. This makes the assessment feel more human and less pressured. It also allows quiet or anxious learners to express their thinking without fear. One strength is that journals encourage continuous reflection, helping students become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses. A challenge, however, is that some learners may not be used to expressing themselves in writing and may need guidance at the beginning. Overall, learning journals support a more inclusive and student-centered learning environment. give me short thoughts here
