There are many uses for psychometric, quantitative data research. To give one example, the University of Guadalajara conducted a study to examine the factors or variables affecting success in the exit exam for students of psychology.https://doi.org/10.1016/j.resu.2016.06.008 The abstract that describes the most important findings states that more research is needed to clarify the results so far. This can be considered one of the limitations of the analysis of quantitative test results.

This study sought to identify possible correlations between the results of the school exit examination for undergraduate psychology students and the following variables: means of admission to college, sex, score on the scholastic aptitude test, and the grade point averages of entering and graduating students. The results show significant differences in performance on the school exit examination according to the studentś sex and means of admission to the university. In addition, there were significant correlations between the results of the school exit examination and student scholastic aptitude test scores. The study suggests the need for more research to determine other variables associated with success on the exit exam, as well as the development of predictive studies that would both enhance our understanding of the phenomenon and aid in developing strategies for improving the academic performance of students.

This shows how data analysis of this type can answer what, when and who questions, but perhaps is not well suited to how and why questions.

This was also evident in Dr. Robinson Cimpian's remarks after presenting the data on the final part of his study across states:

The consistency and ease of analysis of a broad body of data in such types of research gives strong information and reliable findings, especially since most of this type of research is undertaken with a very large number of subjects in order to obtain accurate representation.

The field of psychometrics is very wide and across many institutions it is an important area of study that can provide meaningful information for the purpose of the institution, or for policy decisions.
