Learning, Knowledge and Human Development MOOC’s Updates
Essential Update #2: Option 1
To what extent do you think cognitive development and language are "natural"? What are the potential strengths and weaknesses of neuroscience as an approach to the understanding of learning?
Cognitive development starts at an early age and is one's ability to recognize, process, and retain information. We come into the world with the natural instinct to learn and a willingness to participate in different experiences. Language is the vehicle needed to express curiosity, communicate understanding, and/or fear. For learning to take place, several regions of the brain must be stimulated and encompass a variety of senses and levels of memory. The positive aspect of considering neuroscience in relation to learning is the whole brain is involved and promotes memory retention. However, if an individual is experiencing, stress, lack of sleep, or hunger, these elements disrupt the ability to retain information. As an instructor or facilitator, you can't assume that everyone's brain is ready to learn and apply the one size fits all method to teaching/instruction.
