Behaviourism – Update #1

One key concept of behaviorism is stimuli and response. Behaviorism can be described as a method learning by stimulation from the environment.

This is the most common form of teaching practice in my country. The teacher is charge of the class and the students listen attentively. The teacher provides the stimuli which would be the what is to be taught and the classroom environment and then there are rewards of good grade or praise when the students response in an expected manner.

This practice is also in-line with the culture and customs of my people, where ‘children are seen and not heard’, ‘elders are never wrong and know it all’, ‘children do not have an opinion’. Teachers (the elders in the school) are greatly reverend.

This method of teaching has its advantages. It creates structure and order in the classroom. Students learn to be attentive, follow the instructions of the teacher (elder) with little room for distractions. Zero tolerance for any form of bad behavior and such would attract punishment from the teacher. The major challenge here is when the teacher goes too far with the punishment – or when bright students are praised and weaker students shamed. This results in a lot of students losing self-confidence and become reluctant to ask or answer questions in class.
