What are the dangers and uses of intelligence tests ?

Positives and negatives of Intelligence tests

Literally, the term intelligence tests denote a test which can assess intelligence of an individual by some definite criteria. A Frenchmen named Alfred Binet developed IQ Tests as a remedial element to help the ones who were facing problems in learning. Similarly many other psychologists developed same kind of intelligence tests. However, they would have never thought how how their test would impact future generations on real grounds.
Today everyone knows and talks about intelligence tests. In my perception, they have both positives and negatives when it comes to apply them for assessing an individual's innate intelligence.

The positive side of tests may be that :

  • Weekness identification : They give a standard evaluation score to assess one's weekness, in order to work on it and improve the knowledge absorption or learning.
  • Create room for improvement : Tests may help counsellors or psychologists to design interventions to bring desirable changes.
  • Provide basic grounds for further modifications : Older tests can help develop new or modified versions of the tests, while considering other things.

And the possible dangers could be :

  • Indirect labelling : In certain situations, low score may promote labelling of children. They might get some offensive tags or get bullied by the people or other children around.
  • Limited to learning only : These tests can not evaluate one's way of thinking, creating or management abilities; and are just limited to few tests of intelligence.
  • These are not for everyone : Children who have different needs or have behavioral challenges like Autism or the ones who are highly intellectual or gifted cannot be assessed accurately through these tests.
  • Stressful or Frustrating for children : Regular low and same score may put stress on children. They may feel isolated or develop inferiority complex; which would be entirely inadequate.
