Update #13 Lifelong Learning
Lately, lifelong learning has been frequently discussed. While the concept is far from being new, the fast-paced and technology-oriented society requires individuals to rethink the definition and application of education. Today, in order to obtain a desirable position it's simply not enough to have a Master's Degree. The requirements for a good candidate exceed the knowledge of school curriculum and focus on skills such as: ability to learn quickly and efficiently; problem solving, critical thinking, ability to collaborate efficiently; be innovative and creative. Successful adaptation for modern work and personal environments calls for acknowledgment of necessity of lifelong learning.
Broader access to higher education should not be confined to the continuing professional development required by a fast-changing labour market. It must also respond to a growing demand for the personal development and cultural enrichment opportunities that higher education offers.(Yang, Schneller, Roche 2015).
Lifelong education conceives of the educational process as comprehensive and global in several dimensions: time (education lasts as long as individual's life); all factors affecting the process (education in formal setting, like school), in informal arrangements (services provided outside of school system), other educational setting; and finally it covers the dimension of human characteristics, since it's covered by human characteristics affected by education, since education has to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and behavior, as well as motivation (Cropley, 2014).
Life long education would:
- last the whole life of each individual;
- lead to the systematic acquisition, renewing, upgrading and completion of knowledge, skills and attitudes, as became necessary to response to the constantly changing conditions of modern life, with the ultimate goal of promoting the self-of each individual;
- be dependent for its successful implementation on people's increasing ability and motivation to engage in self-directed learning activities;
- acknowledge the contribution of all available educational influences including formal, non-formal and informal (Cropley, 2014).
In today’s society developing life learning skills is especially crucial in order to become a world citizen. Life-learning in my opinion, is a logical outcome of the ubiquitous learning environment. We have an access and flexibility to obtain new knowledge at any moment and meet emerging expectations of high-skilled professionals. In order to be considered a high potential individual the following traits of exceptional drive, ability, and desire to achieve at high levels must be present (Johnson, 2018).
