Communities of Practice: Strengthening Collaborative Intelligence in Philippine Education
In the Philippines, collaboration has always been at the heart of effective teaching and learning. One key concept that reflects this spirit is the Community of Practice (CoP),a model of collaborative intelligence where people who share a common goal or profession learn from one another through continuous dialogue, reflection, and shared experiences.
Definition:
A Community of Practice, as described by Etienne Wenger (1998), is a group of individuals who engage in collective learning within a shared domain of human activity. Members exchange ideas, share resources, and develop practical solutions to common challenges. In education, CoPs empower teachers to grow professionally while co-creating innovative strategies for student success.
Example in the Philippine Setting:
The Department of Education (DepEd) promotes this concept through Learning Action Cells (LACs), teacher learning communities that meet regularly to discuss challenges, share best practices, and improve instruction. For example, a public school in Bohol organizes monthly LAC sessions where teachers collaborate on integrating digital tools in lesson plans. Even in areas with limited internet access, teachers work together to adapt technology-based activities for their students. These sessions have become powerful platforms for peer learning, mentorship, and innovation.
