Examining the BEEA: A Perspective on Assessment

As a senior high school teacher, I can share as an educational evaluation is the BEEA or Basic Education Exit Assessment. BEEA is a standardized assessment administered to all graduating grade 12 students in the Philippines. It is designed to measure the students’ learnings and competency in the core subjects of K-12 curriculum. BEEA provides a consistent and fair measure of student achievement across the country, allowing for comparisons between schools, regions, and cohorts. It can inform policy decisions, curriculum development, and teacher training to improve the quality of basic education. It can hold schools and teachers accountable for student performance and identify areas where interventions are needed and provide students with feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, helping them to identify areas for improvement. However, BEEA can be a high-stakes assessment for students, as it can affect their future educational and career opportunities. This can lead to increased stress and anxiety among students. Teachers may focus on teaching to the test rather than on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills and it only assesses students' knowledge and skills in the core subjects of the K to 12 curriculum and may not capture other important aspects of their learning, such as creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills.

In general, the BEEA is a valuable tool for assessing student achievement and informing educational policy decisions. However, it is important to recognize its limitations and to use it in conjunction with other measures of student learning.
