Desmos: A Tool for Students to Practice Graphing
Desmos is a web-based tool that enhances math learning by offering interactive activities and a user-friendly interface (Kristanto, 2019). It's particularly valuable in today's online learning environment. Beyond improving student performance, Desmos can make math more engaging by incorporating technology (Quesada & Cooper, 2010).
A study by King (2017) found that 8th-grade students using Desmos for graphing projects developed a strong understanding of the tool and its capabilities. They were able to complete most of their work independently and received immediate feedback, which motivated them to explore further.
Another study by Taufik and Pagiling (2021) focused on training teachers to use Desmos. The results showed that teachers not only became proficient in using the tool but also gained new insights into visualizing abstract mathematical concepts.
Desmos offers several benefits for students:
Independent Exploration: Students can actively explore mathematical concepts through graphing.
Enhanced Creativity: Desmos can stimulate creativity and critical thinking by allowing students to create visual representations.
Improved Problem-Solving: Students can practice solving graph-related problems and develop their analytical skills.
Instant Feedback: Desmos provides immediate feedback, helping students identify and correct errors.
Overall, Desmos is a valuable tool for both students and teachers, providing a more engaging and effective way to learn and teach mathematics.
