Assessment for Learning MOOC’s Updates
Embedded Learning Analytics
Embedded Learning Analytics
The potentials for creating and implementing environments with embedded learning analytics are:
Feedback for the learner is personalized
Assessment shifts from summative to formative (assessment during and for learning)
Progress is measured as the learner is learning (recursive, not linear)
Everyone participates (as opposed to just one learner raising their hand)
Record of collaboration
Collective building of knowledge
Targets interventions so that support can be provided
Gaining insights into student development
Improve the effectiveness of teaching practices
Measurement of key indicators of student performance
No difference between instruction and assessment
The challenges for creating and implementing environments with embedded learning analytics include more work (harder to design than paper and pencil assessments); data privacy and security need to be assured; and, finally, the potential for bias in the data analysis has the potential to lead to inaccurate conclusions resulting in an unequal treatment of students.
While not as in depth as the learning and assessment environment examples provided by our instructors in this class, a tool that offers learning analytics is Literacy Pro. It is computer adaptive and determines the reading levels and considers the interests of a student. It is a blended reading management tool and ebook library (based on student interests, age, and reading level). The tool tracks reading gains and therefore, informs instruction. It offers point of use teacher resources and teacher dashboard alerts. The book quizzes and real time feedback are designed to lead to deeper comprehension. The effect of Literacy Pro is to motivate students to become better readers and document their progress along the way while providing valuable insights for instruction.

This is a good overview of embedded learning analytics and their potential benefits in educational environments! The shift from summative to formative assessment and the focus on personalized feedback and continuous progress tracking are particularly promising for enhancing student learning and engagement. It's great to see how these tools can promote collaboration and collective knowledge-building, while also providing valuable insights into student development and teaching practices.
Thanks for sharing these insights and resources!
