Abstract

Urban identity is a combination of relationships developed from the attributes of several tangible (e.g., topography, climate, and landscape) and intangible (e.g., customs, society, and culture) factors. Due to global integration and urbanization, which entail modern architecture, urban spaces designed in traditional Vietnamese architectural styles are being compromised. In terms of management, the decision to choose between development and the preservation of identity is an issue that arises from economic and social development. Furthermore, this decision is influenced by the need to achieve urban identity through urban planning and design. We chose Quy Nhon City, located along the Hà Thanh River, as our study area. Based on the framework of cultural landscape analysis, we developed an urban landscape design that could support the treatment of surface water while achieving landscape sustainability and preserving the region’s local identity. Our work can serve as a foundation for future studies that aim to achieve a balance between urban development and the preservation of traditional structures.
