Transformation of Relations Between Ukraine and Germany Between 2014 and 2023
Abstract
The article analyzes the peculiarities of cultural interaction between Ukraine and Germany in 2014 to 2023. The study entailed analyzing scientific research regarding the engagement of German citizens with the unique attributes of Ukrainian culture. The Federal Republic of Germany acts as Ukraine’s partner for stabilizing the formation of a democratic society and adherence to European values. In the external arena of the two countries, there is a paradigm shift in cultural relations during the specified period. The Federal Republic of Germany is transitioning to a new format of work where volunteering, including cultural, is becoming the main component, replacing the traditional scheme of interaction where the cultural aspect was provided as a meaningful component of education and science. The practice embodies European values and supplements the educational and scientific components with assistance to refugees, accommodation, adaptation, creation of Ukrainian weekend schools, and support of Ukrainian children in German schools. All of this affects increasing interest in Ukraine. German citizens are becoming more interested in Ukrainian literature, history, and traditional Ukrainian cuisine. Since 2013, the development of cultural interaction between Ukraine and Germany has been linked to the military conflicts in Ukraine, as the public’s interest in the cultural identity of Ukrainians and the causes of the conflicts have been growing. Along with the development of cultural interaction, German volunteerism toward Ukrainians is also growing, as Germans understand and support the people suffering from armed aggression.
