Abstract

Nightlife in the city has become more popular in recent years. One of the reasons is changing lifestyles of people who have more working and leisure activities at night. Technological innovation in lighting devices plays a very important role in facilitating outdoor nightlife. Hong Kong is a metropolitan city famous in its nightlife and lighting. Due to social and economic changes over the past several decades, the lifestyle of the city has changed significantly. This paper first reviews the popularity of nightlife in general. Taking Hong Kong as a case study, this paper identifies technological innovations in night street furniture and accompanying lifestyle changes over the past decades. The paper discusses how technological innovation influences the daily lives of residents and the activities of visitors, and vice versa.
