Phenomenological Exploration of Airport Layovers as Transform ...
Abstract
This study delves into the transformative potential of airport layovers, challenging the conventional notion of these intervals as mere waiting periods. By adopting a phenomenological approach, we explore how Iloilo International Airport, recognized for its unique blend of cultural immersion and modern amenities, shapes travelers’ layover experiences. Through in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of traveler-generated content, we uncover how the airport’s emphasis on local culture, interactive engagement opportunities, and commitment to sustainability contributes to a sense of place and fosters transformative experiences. The findings reveal that travelers perceive their layovers at Iloilo International Airport not just as pauses in their journey but also as meaningful encounters that evoke personal growth, cultural appreciation, and a deeper connection with the destination. This research challenges the traditional understanding of layovers and highlights the potential for airports to become catalysts for transformative travel experiences. It offers valuable insights for airport designers, managers, and tourism stakeholders, seeking to create meaningful and memorable experiences for travelers, even within the confines of a layover.
