Abstract

Mary Robinson, one of the most representative figures in Irish politics, is also a reference in the fight for human rights, such as gender equality or rights of the LGBTQ+ collective. However, her beginnings were not easy. The enormous influence that the Catholic religion had on Irish society and the State marked the presidential election campaign in 1990: misogynistic comments focused on questioning the concept of traditional family, sexist statements toward her person and her work, as well as the attacks directed against the women who supported her in this journey. Therefore, this campaign is known for being one of the toughest in the history of the country. The media transcribed the words of those reluctant to have a female Head of State as well as the stereotypes that some part of society still endorsed.
