Inheritance or Reference?
Abstract
The present research proposes a genealogical exercise concerning Chilean architecture based on the body of projects selected at the 2019 Chilean Architecture Biennial. Such an exercise will allow us not only to identify the main sources declared by local architects but also to discuss the notion of “reference” itself and its reach in the field of architecture. Thus, we approach a space where tension is present, where explicit declarations share room with omissions, buildings by well-known authors and anonymous architecture. All this takes place in a contemporary context characterized by the ever-growing spread of information, which prompts a considerably better chance for us to access diverse sources. In turn, it makes their comprehension more difficult. In this sense, the genealogical exercise proposed intends to build a critical view, which allows us to think about the status of recent architecture in Chile, its influences, and possible identity traits.
