Abstract

Bio-based materials have come to be considered the future of innovation and design. The rate at which the design industry is incorporating research and development of bio-alternatives and transforming them into synthetic products is a sign that biomaterials have a productive future. These revolutionary materials have led to “growing design,” a new sustainable technology resulting from the intersection of biology and design. This research attempts to shed light on the potential of growing design in an interior design context by exploring the literature on bio-based materials, particularly mycelium-based composites, and the growing design process. It discusses the growing conditions, characteristics, manufacturing techniques, and potential applications of such materials as well as the challenges involved in growing design. This review demonstrates that there is significant potential for growing design applications in the future of sustainable interior design and furniture fabrication. The research concludes that the main challenge facing this novel design approach is the lack of consistent knowledge and its application in interior design.
