Feed Them
Abstract
Global hunger is still a major threat to human life. This happens not only because the problem is so widespread, but also because its long-term effects are very serious. To address and solve this issue, the Church is one of the actors with great potential. The Church has a unique and special calling to respond to this crisis. In this study, we reflect on the Church’s special calling to respond to this situation, based on a key event in the New Testament found in Mark 6:35–44. From this passage, we explore what the Church is called to do and emphasize that the command to feed those in need goes beyond what is visible. Providing food to the hungry is indeed important, but we argue that it is even more crucial for the Church to address the deeper structural problems that damage human dignity. We also underline the importance of keeping the Church rooted in this biblical message so it can continue to be a moral and spiritual foundation. In the end, this study shows that the Church must respond to hunger in a way that is different from others by actively working for justice and equality for all people.
