Abstract

About a decade ago most students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria had a hard time accessing the Internet. Access then was mainly through privately run cybercafés. However, with the recent introduction of broadband mobile devices like the smartphones, and tablets, which are equipped with applications that can carry out many of the functions hitherto carried out by portable computers (laptops), students now have easy access to the Internet. The objective of this study is to examine mobile Internet usage habits of undergraduate students of Nigerian universities. Data was collected from three hundred and forty-five (345) undergraduate students in three universities (one each from; federal, state and private universities) in the South-South Geo-political zone of Nigeria. The data was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Data was also analysed on the basis of demographic variables of gender, academic level and institution type. The findings of the study revealed that undergraduate students’ perception about the use of mobile internet for academic purposes was positive.
