Analyzing phonics-based teaching
Phonics-based teaching: a methodology for teaching young children to read and spell words. It creates an association in the learner's mind between written symbols and sounds of language.
Advantages;
- Provide learners Confident; This skill helps learners to decode, or break down, new words into shorter sounds, which can be blended together to form words. Complicated words can be separated into individual letters or letter clusters. So learners easily learn them.
- It helps with spelling; Phonics instruction can help learner spell new words when writing. They break down a word while reading, they can use the approach to break down a word in their minds as they prepare to write it
Disadvantages;
- It fails with nonphonetic words. Using the phonetic approach can lead students in the wrong direction when faced with a word such as "said" which would be read "sayed".
- It fails to promote comprehension. Using only the phonetic approach, a student may read an entire sentence without understanding it causes the method doesn't focus on comprehension.
As we see there are advantages and disadvantages of using phonics-based teaching method. So I always use blended methods. I try to take their positive sides. And I advise you to use different teaching methods according to your learners' skills and levels.
