Learning, Knowledge and Human Development MOOC’s Updates
Essential Update #3 Social-Emotional Learning
Per Dorothy Espelage's presentation(s) we are able to surmise several beneficial affects of optimal social and emotional conditions such as improved academic achievement with .75 increased letter grades, and improved executive skills. Students also gain positive social behaviors such as: kindness, sharing, and empathy. Conversely, a lack of social and emotional conditions might produce results such as aggression and low academic performance. It also important to note that SEL should occur in schools as well as homes of students. To me, SEL is most closely associated with the nurture perspective of psychological development because students are influenced by external environment and social mind, instead of their individual mind or self conscience.
