EDUC 499: Greece - Summer 2019’s Updates
Greece's History and Culture Update
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the videos on Greece. My daughters went with their high school's history department several years ago, and I have wanted to go ever since. This video brought back memories they shared with me through pictures and stories of the many historic sites and ways of life of the people they saw each day.
It is amazing to think that such a small country (in size) has had such a profound and lasting impact on the world, as so much of what is today originated from the Greeks. This is evidenced in that Alexander the Great was able to spread Greek influences over three continents.Today we still utilize words that originated from the Greek language, admire their art, enjoy their food, and read of their legends and myths as just a sampling of how significantly Greeks have left their global footprint.
I was surprised to learn that 40% of the population lives in the capital, Athens. That is a statement to how large of a city we will be visiting. I like that each island has its own unique trait that makes it special, such as Patmos being the religious site where Jesus' disciple John was exiled and wrote the book of Revolation. I always knew that Greece was home to many archaeological sites, but found it fascinating that there are more here per capita than any place else in the world. It is also significant that more tourists than the population of Greece visit Greece each year! I cannot wait to become one of them!
Hi Elisabeth! I really enjoyed watching the videos on Greece as well. I too have always wanted to go to Greece, so when I heard about this program I knew I had to attend!!!! I agree that it was surprising to learn that 40% of the population lives in Athens. This was new to me and it truly does show how large of a city we will be visiting. I cannot wait to see this for myself!
