Ideally, assessment should stimulate the development of key competencies, such as the ability to solve problems, collaborate, think creatively and critically.
Description and evaluation of an innovative approach: Adaptive assessment using artificial intelligence
One of the innovative approaches to assessment is adaptive assessment, which uses artificial intelligence to dynamically change the difficulty of questions depending on the student’s answers. This method provides a more accurate and personalized understanding of the student’s level of knowledge and skills.
How it works: Adaptive assessment analyzes the student’s answers in real time. If the student answers a question correctly, the system offers more difficult tasks. If he or she gets it wrong, the test goes back to more basic questions to accurately identify knowledge gaps. Examples of such platforms are ALEKS and Duolingo English Test, which use similar algorithms.
Personalized approach: Unlike standardized tests, where all students receive the same questions, adaptive tests are adjusted to the level of each student. This avoids situations where strong students are underestimated and weak students are overestimated.
Assessing progress, not just the final result: Adaptive systems can also track a student’s progress throughout the course of study, identifying areas that require additional attention and helping teachers adjust their curriculum.
Instant feedback: Such platforms often provide students with immediate feedback, allowing students to immediately understand their mistakes and improve their results in real time, which stimulates the learning process.
Assessment: Adaptive assessment using AI is a powerful tool for creating a more flexible and fair assessment system that takes into account the individual characteristics of students. This approach not only makes assessment more accurate, but also supports the learning process by helping students better understand their strengths and weaknesses. However, an important ethical challenge remains to ensure that such systems are transparent and do not mislead students about their progress.
