Multimodal Literacies MOOC’s Updates
What skills do students need to read multimodal texts?
Nowadays, I think the multimodal texts, specially in digital formats are essential in the life and the schools are the best place to teach every student how to read them. The students use the multimodal texts all time in the dalily lives, but I think these kind of texts need new ways of literacies for reading them of the traditional texts or printed texts.
The structure of the multimodal texts in a digital context have different structure of the printed texts, for instance, some researchers think the multimodal texts are infinitive and the reader can start to read in any point, there are not specific order. But most of the printed texts have a specific beginning and final part (I know only a novel where the reader can start to read in any chapter "Rayuela" by Cortazar)
Then my hypothesis is: the students need a new skills to face the multimodal texts in digital formats But I don't know which skills are, then I have two questions: What skills do students need to read multimodal texts? and What kind of literacy is useful for teaching new multimodal texts?
Very interesting questions! Regarding the second question ( What kind of literacy is useful for teaching new multimodal texts?) I think the most basic competences we need to have is to be able to use platforms such as padlet or classflow. Ideally, having programming skills and video editing skills could also be very useful.
