New Learning MOOC’s Updates
Make an Update: How have you experienced recent changes in the nature of education, either as a student, or a teacher, or both? Give an example. And/or speak autobiographically.
As we live through the post covid time, it’s saddening to see (at least in my part of the world) how schools have conveniently gone back to the traditional way of teaching and has just forgotten those technological improvements that they were forced to have during the “covid era”. Yes, we are happy that we now have survived the virus and are now able to go back to how everything used to be. Schools are now open, learning is now back in the classroom. However, I feel like the skills that we’ve gained, the technological knowledge we’ve acquired have been pushed aside to make way for traditional learning. The old type of learning or maybe what some believe as the most effective.
I was a teacher in a different country when COVID struck. Schools closed and teacher relied heavily in technologies to continuously provide kids the knowledge that they need. We were all nervous to transition to a different approach. There seemed to be an unending how questions. How do we use this tool? How do we give homework? How do we check homework? How do we show videos? How do we manage classes effectively online? The first few days were chaotic. However, we learned. We gained skills. We improved. We realized how effective technology is when it comes to teaching. After COVID, I noticed how schools have gone back to traditional ways right away. Teaching with a blackboard and a piece of chalk. Discussing in front while kids listened. No more activities, PPT games, or iPad tools that were effectively used during online teaching.
Transformative pedagogy informs us that educators need to make purposeful and appropriate approaches that match their learners. I think the usage of online tools is an effective approach that will benefit many learners.
We need to think and consider what is best for our learners when it comes to teaching. What are the things we need to do to address their needs and learning gaps. There is a need to combine traditional and modern teaching to make the most of our experiences as teacher during pandemic and post pandemic. I think that the best practices in both traditional and modern teaching is a great way to deliver our curriculum. Transformative pedagogy can make use both of the purposeful and appropriate approach in teaching to bring out the best and match what is needed and expected of our learners.

The shift from traditional teaching to modern ways of teaching during the pandemic was quiet thrilling and interesting, it somehow gave birth to many forms of teaching using different modalities. The demands of the new normal in terms of delivering quality education obliged me and pushed me to learn and adapt both best practices in modern and traditional teaching. Ours is a combination of modern and traditional way of teaching which I find helpful and productive. Old values and ways never fade and so i just choose what is applicable and helpful. Traditional way of teaching combined with modern ways aided by technology was excellent way to deliver quality education. The key is to strike the balance.
Your experience o how schools have gone completely back to old methodologies is interesting. I teach at university level, and here the students have essentially not allowed us to go back to old methodologies Now that they understand the technological possibilities, they request hybrid and recorded lectures and more use of technology in the classroom.
