William Cope’s Updates
Alice, Revolutionary Subject
From Brad Evans in the Los Angeles Review of Books:
"Alice in Wonderland is, to my mind, the most important and brilliant book of political theory ever written. It begins with Alice chasing a white rabbit who has no time for anything. Could there be a better metaphor for the contemporary moment than this? In Caroll’s Wonderland the nonsensical is the rule, the exception has become the norm. It’s a place full of injustice, where violence is arbitrary and power is unmediated. And let’s consider the Queen ... she utters therefore it’s true?
"But more important in this brilliantly crafted tale is Alice. She continually learns to see things from different perspectives. Indeed, this little girl is a real revolutionary subject in the most affirmative sense of the term. Alice doesn’t negate the world; she brings out its wonder. Alice doesn’t hide away; she resists what is patently intolerable. Alice doesn’t judge the strange fellows she meets on her journey; she accepts people for their differences."

Very interesting and powerful piece, thanks.
It is a very interesting and meaningful picture. I once again thought about how Alice in Wonderland is viewed as a researcher.
Hello Professor Cope. I enjoyed reading this essay and immediately felt the link to my work in the field of social justice, urban education, and building readiness for change. Evans suggests that dystopian realism is an attack on the future and I can see his point. If we only see a grim future, paralysis sets in from the stress on impending doom. Evans speaks for the social justice educator and community leaders who represent oppressed communities, organize, and take action. Evans reminds us that despite our differences, we are more alike, suggesting that love will lead us to a better tomorrow. This essay reminds us that equity can only be attained if we foster inclusivity, prioritizing those historically underserved and oppressed. Systems remain ineffective due to the results of racism, classism, and sexism, in particular. Additionally, I enjoyed the author's craft in this piece. Evans breathed life into a space that is too often full of anger and resentment. I am grateful you shared this essay because I enjoyed the magical hope a promise in its words of possibilities and transformational change. Real learning happens when exposure increases, opening individuals to new perspectives.
Enjoyed reading the review. The conjunction of Dali and Carrol non sensical but meaningful realities.
