This week was an interesting one because I learnt about something which I am very passionate about- technology in healthcare settings. While doing research for the discussion post, I found a number of cool things that could be done with smartphones alone- starting from diagnosing different diseases using simple biological assays to using it as a communication and data transfer tool. It was interesting to know about the financial investments and constraints regarding healthcare in two different socioeconomic regions since that is something I have little knowledge about. Another amazing thing was that spectacles and mosquito nets are considered medical devices too, something which didn't come to my mind before. It's interesting because these simple inventions have gone on to improve the lives of millions of people and some of them don't even require any sort of education to the consumer. The ratio of doctors to patients in Sierra Leone really surprised me, since I would naturally expect for there to be at least one doctor for two or three thousand people given the circumstances of that country.
