Learning to Write: A look at the 6 +1 Traits of Writing System
One approach to writing instruction that I have used is the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing. With this system of writing instruction, students learn to focus on certain skils that can help them to become effective writers. The skills are: Ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluencey, conventions, and presentation. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE.
There are two specific elements of this system that I like. First, I like the system can be used in multiple contexts. As we learned in this unit, writing truly does depend on the context of the writing piece. Many other writing instruction systems can become too specfic for certain content areas. Also, I like that the system provides a common language for learners. If my instructor offers feedback on my "voice," I, as the learner, know how to process that feedback. I think writing instruction does depend on feedback and a common feedback language can be quite helpful.
However, after reviewing the grammar of multiliteracies, I think this 6 +1 traits writing system could be better. Specifically, I think PURPOSE is something that is overlooked in the 6 +1 traits conversation. Purpose is so directly linked to the writer's thesis and also how the meanings are "designed to serve." A close examination would suggest that the 6 +1 traits system should encourage writers to anaylze purpose and audience more.
