Update 5: Predictive Learning Analytics
“Predictive Learning Analytics or PLA for short is a methodology designed to pinpoint the underlying causes of scrap learning associated with a training program so that targeted corrective actions can be taken to maximize training transfer” (Predictive Analytics, n.d.).
This concept is unique because it designed to pinpoint the underlying causes of learning that is not applied back on the job and apply fixes in order to improve knowledge transfer and increase performance. Not only does is target the learner, it also targets managers and supervisors who may have challenges with helping to support learning transfer. I have only heard of Predictive Learning Analytics being discussed in the Human Resource Development realm and wasn’t sure if was if anything was being discussed in the context of higher education. I found an article that explores whether higher education is ready for PLA.

Students can learning use this data to analyze their own learning in comparison with their peers and adjust their behaviors and tactics as needed. In addition, they receive real-time prompts to access support materials to help with knowledge gaps in a certain subject. Also, students can enhance their own learning path and can see what success looks like if they choose a particular path.
There are benefits for facilitators (help with organizing interventions), instructional designers (increase the quality of instructional deliverables), and institutional leaders (resource allocation for better student support).
The study found that there is a lack of staff and technology to support learning analytics in higher education. It is suggested that more empirical research regarding the soundness of learning analytics frameworks and the anticipated benefits for learning.
Joseph, I'm going to sound stupid now, but what is scrap learning?
@ Magdaleen Lotter. Good question! I take scrap learning to mean learning that it is wasted. Meaning the knowledge/skills acquired via the learning process are not applied back on the job. I hope that makes sense.
Thanks for asking! I should have clarified that.
