Abstract:
Bangkok is marked by segregated spatial logics that exist beside and above each other, partially in line with globalization theory, and partially contradicting this very notion. The resulting inconsistencies and contradictions portray urban space as an unpredictable cosmos, where the conflicts of spatial restructuring that threaten to diminish the space of place may create unforeseeable niches. While disparate power dynamics may frequently exclude the marginalized population, this study shows that the collision between global space and local place, both horizontally and vertically, can produce gray areas as people show creative reactions to changes in their domains of living. This paper presents a broad insight into Bangkok’s everyday life with a particular focus on shopping culture and inner-city transportation.
