Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability in Higher Education: Developing a Masters Degree Program for Sustainability Science

Abstract

It is important to recognize artificial intelligence in general problem-solving. AI has the ability to process vast amount of data, identify complex patterns, and generate solutions faster and more accurately than traditional human methods alone. The greatest challenge today is solving critical issues in planetary sustainability. AI offers transformative tools for addressing key issues in sustainability science, including the climate crisis, resource depletion and food security. This paper presents the outlines of a graduate curriculum designed at the masters degree level which utilizes the tools of AI to solve sustainability issues. It explains why this program is needed and the specific subjects which are covered in such a curriculum.
