Week 4 Update - Emma

Frances Nelson Health Center :

In the center, we see many different rooms serving different purposes and they all contain a lot of high-tech technologies. Here, it seems like they really want and need what’s best for the patient’s care. They will need really precise technologies but they will also need the staff to use them properly because these devices are sometimes hard to use. Moreover, they will need trained employees for the maintenance of all the machines and to make sure they still work. They also need to keep track of the supplies to make sure the doctors have everything they need for the patients.

Carle Clinic :

In the first and last part of the video, we see that the clinic takes care of a lot of kids which means they are going to need technologies that are adapted to them : it will probably have to be smaller. The technologies like AccuVein also make children care easier because they usually move a lot and their veins are smaller. They will probably need technologies that allow them to be more efficient with children and that won’t hurt them. They will also need well trained staff because taking care of children is different from adults as their bodies are still growing and they are usually more sensitive and won’t react the same way.

We also see that they send ambulances for when emergencies which mean they will need staff trained to react quickly and efficiently to any kind of emergency. They will also need to keep track of the supplies of the ambulance to be sure the staff has everything they need. Another thing they will need is to keep track of the vehicles : how many they can send, how many have left, when they are coming back, having room and staff ready to welcome the patient the ambulance went to get…

Sierra Leone Clinic :

One thing that seemed really important in Sierra Leone Clinic is the community so they need to build as much as possible.

Then, as these women have to come on the back of a motorbike or walking, they need to come as less as possible but they still need to come sometimes especially pregnant women or women with young kids to do check-up exams and make sure the baby or kid is alright. This is probably why they have those dedicated days : the women can come and take the follow-up exams they need. As there are a lot of women waiting, they need devices that allows them to do quick and efficient exams like the HIV test we saw for example. They also need health devices that people can use themselves at home. One really simple thing for example is that they could teach the mother to take the measurements of the baby.

From what we saw, they only use manual devices like manual balances which means they don’t have power so they will need self sustainable devices like clock-work powered monitors.

Nyakibal Hospital :

In the video we see an emergency room that has just been renovated thanks to support from people. This means that they wouldn’t have had the money to buy all this by themselves and that they need financial support and sponsors so the hospital can work.

From what the doctor showed us in the video, we can tell they need basic devices that allow them to treat and examine patients quickly, for example the lights, the light box, the stretchers. They don't have a lot of those so they will probably need more in order to treat patients more efficiently. The problem is that they don't necessarily have the money to buy several ones, they would need devices that they carry around. They also need devices for sterilization as they work in a place where everything may not be really clean all the time.

I also noticed that they don’t have a lot of room to stock the supplies and the medicines which is why they will need everything that is essential but they won’t be able to stock extra supplies.
