Abstract
Typography, visual material and the hierarchical relationship between the two help children and adults understand medical procedure preparatory materials. Slovenia’s largest hospital, The University Medical Center Ljubljana, offers preparatory materials on their website, that specifically address children and adults. The focus of the research is to determine the suitability of the materials of most frequently performed procedures (magnetic resonance imaging, echocardiography, urinary tract ultrasound, outpatient examination at the doctor and blood sampling) intended for individual target groups and compare them. By researching the topic, it is possible to determine the structural and content elements, the development, and levels of suitability of preparatory materials. The findings are crucial, as they enable addressing the (mis)understanding of existing preparatory materials, on which both groups depend on. This research falls into the field of visual communications. The method used is the analysis of preparatory materials through the semantic method of data collection, evidence synthesis, formal visual analysis, and analysis through the theory of typography in connection with the perception of written health information. The results show that the information was communicated to adults inappropriately and appropriately to children, which was primarily influenced by the cooperation between the health and design professions in the development of the material. This leads to the conclusions that in order to create an appropriate information material, we need the contribution of both professions, as the health profession provides accurate and appropriate information about the procedure protocol, while the design profession interprets it visually.
