Environmental and Social Sustainability in Office Design: A Case of Office cum Guest House at Kerala, India

Abstract

Sustainability in buildings is the need of the hour. 30% of energy consumption globally comes from buildings. Also It is essential to combine environmentally sustainability with social sustainability to ensure that everybody including the marginalised sections of the society has access to the resources. This study presents my experience of designing a project- Office cum Guest house for M/s Elements where we attempted a simple, functionalistic building with almost zero plastic. With 5400 sq.ft in area, it is located at Ulikkal near Iritty where elements organic store has their coconut processing unit. We have experimented a few things which demanded pragmatic ideas, utmost precision and skill from the execution team and monetary support, endurance and an open mind from the client.
