Bridging Communities and Classrooms: The Role of University-Led Sports Programs

Abstract

This paper explores how university-led and community sports programs influence educational outcomes in urban schools through a critical analysis of existing research and successful initiatives. The analysis identifies key patterns, including the importance of cross-sector partnerships, equitable program access, and targeted design strategies, while addressing gaps in implementation. Parks and recreation departments play a unique role as vehicles for connecting underserved communities with university resources, fostering a symbiotic relationship that benefits institutions and local populations. Implications for practitioners emphasize actionable strategies for initiating and scaling partnerships, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study provides a roadmap for leveraging research and existing programs to create sustainable, impactful initiatives that promote educational equity through sports.
