Ergonomic Risk Assessment in Youth’s Mobile Device Usage: An Industrial Engineering Approach with OPTITRACK Motion Capture

Abstract

This study investigates ergonomic risks faced by youths while engaging with content on mobile devices, utilizing the OPTITRACK motion capture system and the REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) ergonomic evaluation method. Through a meticulously designed experiment in a controlled environment, postures assumed during device interaction were replicated and analyzed. The research, quantitatively driven yet enhanced by qualitative analyses, aimed to assess how OPTITRACK could accurately replicate these postures and its effectiveness in identifying potential ergonomic risks. The methodology involves setting up and calibrating the OPTITRACK system, selecting suitable software for precise ergonomic data capture, and executing capture sessions based on detailed protocols. This approach enabled the reliable collection of data for subsequent ergonomic analysis. The experiment was informed by an initial focus on industrial engineering principles, ensuring the experimental design was grounded in relevant practices and findings. Results demonstrated OPTITRACK’s effectiveness in accurately replicating postures and its utility in identifying ergonomic risks, leading to specific recommendations for improving ergonomics in youths’ use of mobile devices. This study underscores the significance of integrating advanced motion capture technologies and rigorous ergonomic assessments to identify and mitigate ergonomic risks associated with digital consumption, proposing avenues for safer and healthier technological interaction. It highlights the crucial connection between industrial engineering and ergonomic risk management, offering insights for enhancing user safety in the digital age.
