Abstract
Higher education is the most powerful instrument for making a modern and disciplined society that can lead to a country’s brighter future in the era of globalization and advancing competencies. Governance is one of the key problem of higher education in Pakistan. The composition of the governing bodies and administrative setup of the tertiary institutions are influenced either usually by political interference or by the administration, and merit is rarely followed which leads to biased academic decisions. Transparency, merit and autonomy have less importance rather an authoritative and dictating attitude prevails in the tertiary institutions to acquire favourable and desired benefits and objectives which consequently compromises also the quality of education. This paper highlights the main challenges allied with higher education in Pakistan related to governance and discusses potential approaches to overcome the fundamental challenges.
