Visual Arts-based Multiliteracies as Additional Means of Instruction for the Deaf in South Africa

Abstract

This study explores the potential of integrating Visual Arts (VA)-based multiliteracies into the South African Sign Language (SASL) curriculum to enhance literacy skills for Deaf learners. Recognising the unique needs of the Deaf community, this research focuses on Deaf schooling, examining visual means as a tool for improved education. By investigating how teachers can enhance instruction through VA-based multiliteracies, this study aims to unlock Deaf learners’ potential and improve their classroom performance.
