Project-Based Learning: A Steam-Based Model

Abstract

Integration of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) is a learning approach to prepare students to solve problems with innovative, creative, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication to construct new knowledge. Project-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical approach where students work on projects linked to real-world problems either individually or in groups. The student’s active engagement in the learning activities fosters the knowledge and skills integrating the STEAM approach. The main objectives of the workshop are to understand the concept of the STEAM integrated project-based learning model and design the STEAM project. Participants in their group will write their opinions on the issues and challenges of the implementation of PBL. The real-world objects will be provided to each group and let them integrate the objects with various dimensions of STEAM. Each participant will connect the component of STEAM to the real-world object and share it in a group. The meaning of PBL and its components will be discussed through interaction and connecting the STEAM approach. A worksheet for project design will be provided in a group. The facilitator will insist on completing the worksheet of project design. The different SDG goals will be introduced to identify the problem and make a project title. STEAM components will be discussed in a group and integrated with the project title. Each group will set the intended learning goals and prepare innovative activities to fulfill the learning goals. The rubrics will be developed to assess students’ project implementation.
