Abstract
The doctoral study investigated the impact of Florida certification standards within critical teacher shortage fields in Northeast Florida. This research seeks to comprehensively understand the motivations and barriers faced by teacher candidates in Northeast Florida. Using a qualitative approach, this research facilitated an exploration of teachers’ perceptions and experiences regarding the certification processes associated with critical shortage fields. The findings reveal diverse perspectives held by teachers regarding the certification process. Some teachers expressed the motivation due to factors such as salary, benefits, and working conditions. In contrast, others expressed demotivation from bureaucratic challenges, stress, and concerns about teacher salaries. These factors significantly influenced teachers’ decision-making processes when selecting their career paths. Based on these findings, the research provides recommendations to improve the certification experience and introduce innovative measures to address challenges associated with the critical teacher shortage certification process for preservice teachers. Implementing these recommendations is expected to enhance the accessibility and supportiveness of the certification journey for aspiring teachers in Northeast Florida’s critical shortage fields, ultimately increasing the number of qualified educators in these areas. In conclusion, this study contributes to existing knowledge on the impact of Florida certification standards in Northeast Florida’s critical teacher shortage fields. By comprehensively examining the obstacles faced by teacher candidates, this research provides valuable insights into the factors that influence their decision-making processes and shape the future of the teaching profession in these high-need areas.
