Abstract
Higher education as ever is undergoing a transformational phase as technological advancements such as generative artificial intelligence (AI) are transpiring into the educational ecosystems. Given the transformations and ongoing deliberations on the acceptance and implementation of generative AI and its tools like ChatGPT in higher education, this article explores their possibilities and challenges from the perspective of experts working in this domain. A qualitative approach is used to collect data. Findings of the study, i) define generative AI and its implications in higher education, ii) discuss the structural, technical, and policy-level challenges that exist with the implementation of tools like ChatGPT in higher education, and iii) highlight how generative AI can inspire the next wave of innovation in higher education. Alongside this, the study emphasizes the need for better media literacy training and integrity as a prerequisite for this increased technological interdependency.
