Designed to Learn: Raising Community Voice to Design the Change We Want to See in the World

Abstract

Creating a unifying vision for learning while honoring the myriad voices and identities of our learners is no simple feat. In this fast-paced workshop we use a design thinking inspired protocol as participants push beyond rote problem identification tasks and engage in the co-constructed process of identifying missing narratives in learning and building towards a more inclusive future of education. Together we’ll consider trending demands for workforce skills and what that means for the future of learning while identifying ways to infuse tomorrow’s needs within today’s learning environment through a lens of inclusivity and accessibility. Part cognitive science and part systems thinking, participants will discuss, create, and then iterate on plans for challenging the power structures in their learning space by inviting in the voices of every stakeholder all while strengthening essential learning skills for the future from critical thinking and active learning to creativity and complex problem-solving. Embedded within the workshop are models of formative assessment to ensure the process itself surfaces the deep learning that takes place when innovative pedagogies replace the rote and learners see themselves represented in their learning space.
