Abstract
The tourism industry serves as a key driver of economic growth for many destinations, countries, and economies. However, it faces significant challenges, particularly environmental ones, and must strive to balance sustainability with continued economic development. ISO standards offer structured frameworks that guide organizations in organizing and managing specific business processes. In recent years, several standards have been introduced to address the unique challenges of the tourism sector and support organizations in responding effectively. Efforts to promote sustainable tourism aim to create a positive impact on the environment, society, and economy of tourist destinations. ISO standards also support and enhance quality and safety, helping organizations build a positive reputation and comply with regulations. This paper explores how current ISO standards contribute to embedding sustainability within the tourism industry’s operations, focusing on managing environmental, social, and economic impacts. The most important characteristics of standards concerning these issues are presented.
